Email From the inmates at Ft Dix Re: Tu Bishvat

17 Shevat 5772-Feb 9th 2012- BY: Yossi Shereshevsky

I went to sleep Tuesday night and had a dream. When I woke up, we had, thanks to Askunim, the most beautiful display of all kinds of fruits, that were spread out in the Bais Medrash, so we could make Shehecheyanu. The fruits were tantalizingly delicious. The past 3 years at the other institution I was at, the jail made sure we had Shehecheyanu, but not to the quality of this years.
This was Mamish a Kiddush Ha-shem as all the non frum Jews who never even heard of Tu Beshvat were able now to participate in learning the Minhagim of Klal Yisroel which are "KULO KODOSH" and what Rosh Hashono Lueilonos is, and what Birkas Shehecheyanu is. And we saw the pictures of previous years of the "Tischen" that Askunim provided, so we can at least be there in our minds. Mamish "Veuhavta Lerayacho Komocho was Mekuyim. What a Kiddush Ha-shem.

It was awesome. Even the people who never come to Mincha, came, because they heard about the fruit platter. We had Parmagerants, and star fruit, dates and figs, sabras, and other specialties. People that never put on Tefillin before, came and saw the display, and while they were there they put on Tefillin. And then I was asked to get up to speak and to give a short description of the holiday and to give Hakoras Hatov to Askunim for supplying and working toward this event.

And then. And then. And then.

And then, as I got up to speak and I started to say the first word, I got up again. And I realized that I dreamt what should of been. And as the day went on and they DIDN'T called us to the Chapel, I realized that they weren't going to, I realized that at least in my dreams I made a Shehecheyanu. And I dreamt about the Kiddush Ha-shem that could of been. And then I started to pray that G-D should forgive all those who knew for themselves to go to the Big Rebbes, and their Tischen and get Shehecheyanu for themselves and their families, but forgot about their brothers in Ft. Dix and their families.

And I called a meeting of all the Jews in Ft. Dix, and together we forgave all these Jews that forgot about us. And together we made a Shehecheyanu on the Brocho of forgiveness. And the Rabbi found some dates in the Moslem Community so we could at least be a shtikel Yotzeh with that. And we each had between 1/2 a date and a whole one.

Yes my brothers. We forgive you. Hearty appetite.

And I will say one other thing. That the Birkas Shehecheyanu that we made with the dates that Rabbi Samet miracously found had more Holiness to it, than any of the beautiful displays of all the big Tischen put together. And all of you should be eating from our Shirayim. But like I said we forgive you.

Commentary by: Yaakov Alter ben Shifra Tsharna

It should be noted, in regard to the issue of Tu B'Shvat celebrations in jail, we all know that we live in a supposed "Malchus Shel Chesed", where we have Freedom of Religion, even in jail. More or less, any tradition from any religion, which is recognized by their religion, is recognized by the BOP - at least to a minimum extent. The only reason why Tu B'Shvat isn't recognized by the BOP, is because the Askanim haven't done anything for this. If the askanim would bring this to the BOP and Washington DC, that Tu B'Shvat is a holiday and tradition which is necessary for us, there is no question we'd have it. Maybe the askanim don't see this holiday as so important, or maybe they don't feel they can be successful with it.

I'm 100% certain that no Shomrei Torah u'mitzvos will dispute this. Here in the BOP they have about 16-17 different recognized religious groups. Each of the groups has their customs and traditions which they follow. The BOP to some degree, more or less, gives to each religion their basic needs. But everyone can agree that all of the Jewish traditions are 1000 times more important to us than all the other religions. Because all of their traditions and customs have been made by human beings in the past 2000 years and most have been derived from ours; but ours are commanded directly by Hashem. So every tradition we have, we're obligated to fulfill, and the BOP will provide them if the right advocates will lobby for this.

So basically, I don't think we have to blame the BOP for this, but rather we must make certain that our Askanim take care of this for us. There's no question that providing for us to have the opportunity to have the fruits and make shehechiyanu is a great mitzvah, and part of Pidyon Shvuyim.

Please take in mind the following mitzvos that we would fulfill:
1) to fulfill the custom/tradition of making shehechiyanu on a pri ha'etz
2) to feed hungry people who have no other opportunity to have the fruits, and now they have this opportunity to have this kind of food, and bring them simchas Yom Tov in addition. Some people are in prison here for many years (even decades), and haven't had the opportunity to eat most of these fruits in so long which other people on the street take for granted.

3) if this opportunity were available, more people would come to fulfill the mitzvah, daven, put on tefillin, etc.

4) people who wouldn't know about the custom, would now have the opportunity to learn

5) during the time of being in the Chapel, the people wouldn't need be in the atmosphere of tumah of the compound

6) many other reasons

Each of the reasons mentioned above is enough reason for the askanim to establish at BOP Headquarters that Tu B'Shvat is a Jewish Custom to fulfill, and to establish that it be provided for in jails and prisons throughout the nation.

I hope that someone will pay attention and advocate for this, among many other needs we need here. As I've mentioned before, I believe everyone would agree with the above; if anyone disagrees, please explain why not. In the meantime, we have fulfilled Tu B'Shvat this year as the Rosh HaKollel shlita has explained. Hashem should send a full yeshia for us and alle Yidden in gichen.

Please forward to whomever you can and whomever you know. And if you have any suggestions, send the comments.

Thank You,
The Jewish Community of Fort Dix

Invest in the present for your share in the future.

This is a very sad time for Klall Yisroel look at what's happening around the world, so much difficulties in all ways more then ever to every one.

I know some readers will Chas VeSholom say, well, they ( the prisoners) caused it... to them to be in prison, let the C"V rot there, that's 1000% wrong because we still have a Mitzvah of loving a fellow Yid NO matter where ever they are, and YES lets put together a nice display for Shelech Monos for Purim and send it to each and every Jew who is locked up where ever they are, with lots of Love to all Yidden from Japan across to USA etc.

Now Do we realize whats happening to Gedolai Yisroel around the world?

How about making a kidush Hashem by not committiing the crime, not only by not getting caught?
Do you you think the Tanoim who were in Jail at the time of the churban for being who they were got Peiros On TubiShvat?
Did Reb Akiva get water for netilas yodayim?Or did he use his drinking water?
Did the Yidden of Auschvitz who's only crime was being Jewish, get Kosher food or any food let alone peiros for tubi shvat?
How about Matzos for Pesach?
You quote the Torah yes the Torah says Thou shall Not steal,or defame the name of Gd what did you do with those Posukim, or Tubi shvat peiros are more important? Maybe those mitzvos are for others?
Then you distort Shulchan Aruch & call it pidyon shevuyim to send a fruit basket to crooks & whatever other crimes you committed.
Not to say I don't feel bad for deprived people, but there are no liberties in jail.
Did you fell bad for those who you cheated?
Any way A Gitten Piyrim to all of you.
I hope this isn't for real.

Did Shereshevsky ever ask mechila or try to pay back any of his victims?

And then we got the typical cover up from the corrupt rabbonim. Rabbi Silver from the OU shul in Virginia was personally involved in the scam by finding dope investors. He got up after Shereshevsky's arrest to warn everyone in the derasha that Shabbos (many of them victims) that it's "lashon horah" to discuss the ponzi scheme.

A bunch of Satmar rabbunim went to the Federal pen. in Virginia to visit the pedophile incarcerated for incest - Weingarten ymach shmoi who was once a rebbe working for Margulies in YTT. Gedolei haposkim in Antwerpen and Eretz Yisruel said he should be reported to the police. The senile Moishe Green from Yeshiva d'Monsey who should be locked up for his own good said that it was "mesirah" to have Weingarten arrested and it was "goirim the Kletzky murder".

Yossi, if this were not a malchus shel chesed, an oisvorf like you would have been executed. Don't forgive, just return the money!!

Monsey said...

Just this week Moishe Green issued a letter than he needs to raise 100 grand to hire big shot lawyers to review Weingarten's case to get him out of the 30 year sentence.

He says there is a chiyuv for everyone to donate at least $180 each.

Can someone make a cheshbon just for the "Hatzolas Rubashkin" how many yeshivos would not have gone under if the money was redirected there instead of enriching Nat Lewin with his dumb ideas that got Sholom Mordechai an even longer prison sentence with no plea bargain and years added for contempt? With the latest futile attempt to take Rubashkin to the US Supreme Court, Nat Lewin has finally agreed to step aside.

It's suspicious that the OU only tested sardines for sardine-specific nematodes and didn't test other fish species for anisakis while they were at it. The ossrim say that worms are migrating in partially gutted fish that are larger than sardines. The OU has a huge vested interest in anisakis remaining permitted.

Genetic testing by a parasitologist at the American Museum of Natural History ...

The museum got involved last March when rabbis from the Orthodox Union, which certifies as kosher hundreds of thousands of products across the world, sought scientific help in resolving a question that arose when they began finding the worms, or nematodes, in cans of sardines.

Stones supposedly taken from the Kotel in Jerusalem are being offered for sale on internet auction site eBay, as talismans for good luck and health.

Jewish people from the world over saw this as sacrilege and alerted Kotel Rabbi Rav Shmuel Rabinovich to the phenomenon.

In response, Rav Rabinovich wrote the site's owners and demanded that they stop allowing the sales. He explained that use of stones from the Kotel is sacrilegious and belongs to the most serious category of offenses in Judaism because it is forbidden by the Torah itself.

Besides, he noted, it is a violation of the Israeli Antiquities Law.

The Rabbi quoted the late Rav Moshe Feinstein who wrote (in Igrot Moshe) that anyone committing such an act is embezzling sacred heavenly items and transgressing very seriously. Furthermore, Rav Rabinovich explains, there is fraud involved, too, because Kotel stones do not possess power to heal and bless. On the contrary, the rabbi contended, they will confer a curse on whoever possesses them.

In his book on Halachot and Customs at the Kotel, Rav Rabinovich quotes Rav Yitzchak Zilberstein as telling a story of a woman who fell ill. Her husband heard that if he places a small stone from the Kotel under her head, she will regain her health. However, the moment he did so – she passed away.

http://www.lohud.com/article/20120208/NEWS03/302070099/Ex-Monsey-fire-commissioner-sentenced-12-months-1-day-mail-fraud

The former Monsey fire commissioner who attempted to defraud taxpayers in a real estate scheme to pay off a six-figure personal debt was sentenced Tuesday to 12 months and one day in prison.

Nathan Rothschild, 54, the ex-fire district chairman and former president of the East Ramapo Board of Education, had sought probation after pleading guilty to one count of mail fraud in the summer.

With about a dozen of Rothschild’s relatives and friends in the courtroom, Rothschild’s brother Zeev; his rabbi, Ephraim Pessin; and Monsey Fire Commissioner Jonathan Kaufman spoke for more than 30 minutes, citing Rothschild’s long history of civic and religious community service.

They asked Karas to consider Rothschild’s diagnosis of bipolar disorder and his health problems in the sentence. Rothschild entered and exited the courthouse by using a walker.

Outside the courtroom, Rothschild’s attorney, Michael Burnbaum, called the ruling fair.

He said he didn’t expect his client to appeal the sentence.

The sentencing began with an element of intrigue as Karas announced he had been notified Monday that Burnbaum was the subject of current Massachusetts State Bar proceedings. The probe, through which Burnbaum could potentially be disbarred, was sparked by a complaint filed against him in November in Massachusetts. Karas questioned Burnbaum about the proceedings and concluded that since he was still in good standing with the Massachusetts State Bar and the case was long over, there was no issue about his ability to counsel Rothschild. Rothschild, who said he had known of Burnbaum’s criminal conviction, said he chose to keep Burnbaum as his lawyer.

What a chutpah & mesaper achar mitosom shel Tzadikim.
Did the Maharam M'Ruttenberg Chas Veshalom defraud any one or run a Ponzi? Was he ever mechalel Sheim Shomayim?
He was in jail because the Goyim wanted money from the yidden only. He was moiser nefesh & said that he should not be freed even though it was the real pidyon Shevuyim min Hatorah, because he didn't want all the Robonim rounded up.
He definatly diidn't get Tubi shvat peiros nor did he ask for them.
Who know if he even got any food.
Even as a Purim Joke this is beyond a joke.

It's not for the same reason but it is assur to be poideh either the Maharam or Shereshevsky. The Maharam because he poskened it would spur goyim to kidnap more Yidden and Shereshevsky because poskim say that lowlives like him should be handed over even to be locked up because they pose a danger to Yidden.
