Update-Due to the questionable kashrus standards in camps, every camp should be under a recognized reliable Hashgocha?

Just in-A gangster running a certain Bais Yaakov revoked a girl's acceptance after the father asked about the kashrus in the kitchen.

Did you inquire as to your childs camp Kashrus standard?
Is it acceptable?

Are there written policies for the acceptable hashgochas?
If yes?, obtain a copy.

What should I ask?
1- Who is in charge? Who sets the standards?
Any shailos that arise, who is the final Rabbinical authority?

Is there a Qualified Mashgiach in Charge?

2- Are the using "exclusively" pre-checked vegetables?
If yes?, who's vegetables? not most of them, but all brands that are being used!
If no?, Who is checking them?, is he trained? if yes? by whom?
Is it only being rinsed?

3- How about fruit? e.g. strawberries, blueberries, raspberries? What is the standard being utilized?

4- Bishul Yisroel issues- Convection ovens, steam kettles, etc.
Is bishul-yisroel for sfardim being addressed?
Is a shomer shabbos present in the kitchen at all times? [flames, ovens, etc]

5- Is yoshon, cholov yisroel, pas yisroel being strictly observed?
Hafroshs Chalah- who is responsible?

6- Who is responsible to check "all" deliveries coming in for compliance to the standards established?

7- Is there a properly trained experienced Mashgiach in the kitchen at all times?

8- Is the kitchen locked at night, Friday afternoon, etc? Who are all that have the keys?

9- Are the separate areas for dairy, meat, parve, etc? including sinks, etc?

10- Are all pots, utensils, etc clearly marked for dairy, meat, parve,?

11- Who is responsible for everything requiring seals?

12- ETC.?

  2. I don't think any camp even a yeshiva camp has properly trained people to check vegetables, etc for insects and clean properly.

They should use one of the reliable ones out there, which would be either positive or kosher garden "don't confuse with kosher-taste".

  3. bgan and eden is pretty good as well, based on what ive seen from the few bags that ive checked

kosher taste golden taste bodek has bugs, way too many bugs, almost every box ive checked, not sure what they are doing over there but its not working

gush katif veggies are pretty good too, not as good as postiv, but if you soak in soap water and wash they are reliable

  6. Can't believe that Sprinkles is doing this again.
They had 2 stores in Brooklyn and after a couple they suddenly closed.
Like open at 11PM on day 1 and the next morning they closed never to open again ?!?!?!?!.
    Strange.

  7. One Bais Yaakov has a caterer who doubles as the money guy who decides tuition breaks, and he is a very shverra baal davar who on the odd occasion a hanocho materializes, it is a very stingy and small one. This is true even when it comes to kollel yungerleit. He allows problematic food items to be served by lunch because he has a conflict of interest to make more profit for himself. The hanhala won't grow a backbone and take a stand or even ask him a single question. They tell you to speak to the guy. And everyone is afraid to raise questions about the kashrus to him because he will probably retaliate with the tuition.

    ReplyDelete
  8. There are yeshivos / BYs that if you ask too many questions about kashrus before your kids are enrolled, they will revoke their acceptance. And even if the questions are all standard some of the moysdos will brand you a crazy kanoiee.

  9. "a caterer who doubles as the money guy who decides tuition breaks"

Chotsh, a board member once warned him to start talking with mentchlichkeit while not giving breaks. No reason to act like a beheima on top of everything else.

I heard he was not a real caterer at his old job. He was a cook for a caterer and that Rav Belsky called him a meshugena.

  11. I know in Torah V'daas they use Dole and Fresh express And everyone eats without question. all the talmidim innocently assume it's postive or kosher gardens without asking. In addition, they use celery without checking it for leaf miners.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The King of Kashrus gave a public shiur at his shul on Nostrand Ave in Flatbush that Fresh Express has more bugs per bag than any other brand. And he is a Torah Vodaasnik.

Even weirder is that Rabbi Belsky alein told people not to eat Bodek romaine despite having his approval printed on the package because it is simply too infested.

    1. Problem is that in torah v'daas the Jewish cook is in charge and all the rabbanim including rabbi reisman are afraid of making any type of complaints. If you even question or ask about kashrus in the kitchen the Jewish cook will publicly scream at you and embarrass you. He claims he knows kashrus better then any Rav ha'machshir. Their were several brave torah v'daas talmidim that exposed some kashrus concerns and one of them was thrown out of the yeshiva for causing panic which indeed had valid basis. All rabbanim and talmidim of torah v'daas are afraid to stand up against the Jewish cook because they know the outcome.

In the old Camp Horim, they would pick up jello that fell on the floor (double doors-one for in only;one for out only. Some dumb busboy who was dead tired from a late night at Lucky Dip went in the out door and overturned the whole jello tray). The funny thing was that it actually tasted better.

Don't kid yourself! Rich people like jobs instead of sitting around at home. And haymishe rich people want their krovim to have jobs that (at least appear to be) klei koidesh.

Fruchthandler has a bunch of relatives that he arranged to be working at Artscroll. Some of them are at the Mesorah Foundation division & it's not even clear what they do to make themselves useful while getting 6 figure salaries.

Leib Pinter also has a bunch of relatives placed at Artscroll. But the biggest stunt of all is that he lived around the corner from Mirrer yeshiva for decades but wouldn't step foot inside. But then he has a son who is in Lakewood kollel for too long who needs a shteller. All of a sudden Leib Pinter is hanging out in the Mir yomam velayla & raising $$$ for them. The next thing you know his son is made rebbi in the mesivta & Leib gets a desk in the financial office. A lot of people were upset about this. The whole story was not being told to the rosh yeshiva ztl. When someone finally told the rosh yeshiva ztl the "REST OF THE STORY", at least Pinter no longer had a desk until he re-enrolled in the "Cheder" Upstate where he was gabbai of the same minyan where Sholom Rubashkin is the baal tokaya. There is a tzad hashoveh there. R' Yudel has information about the propriety of Agri fleish and the NY Times reported in the 1970s about a Congressional investigation that found Pinter was selling treif baloney & cheese sandwiches as "kosher".

Mountain Fresh Dairy Partner Zeev Rothschild.

Most of the pipes and tanks were removed when the old plant closed, so Mountain Fresh Dairy had to purchase all the equipment seen in the plant today.

Employment will also be coming back to the southside, as Mountain Fresh Dairy will produce around the clock and will need experienced hands.

"Right now this building, including us and the tenants we're going to have here, [will] probably have 25 people working here within a very short time. Then we can grow to 50, 75 in the short future," Rothschild continued.

This project has been in the works for about three years, as they have been met with many delays along the way.

"We've just had big, delay after delay after delay. We're just happy the city worked with us and the county worked with us and we finally got it finished," said Plant Manager Gary Bensley.

"Everything has to be perfect and thank God we achieved that," said Rothschild.

Mountain Fresh Dairy plans to distribute the milk to larger cities in New York and New Jersey, and they are working with stores across Upstate to distribute locally.

They also have equipment ready to begin producing Kosher cottage cheese after milk production is established.

Start by offering free service for a month and then just charge for your direct costs for a month then add a bit for indirect costs and then add another bite for a bit of profit and then more for lost revenue .... why am I telling you how to make a living as world renowned Mashgiach a kosher service provider?
