New England Journal of Medicine recent article re: eating raw fish

A 36-year-old previously healthy woman presented with a 2-day history of severe chest pain and epigastric pain associated with nausea and vomiting. Physical examination showed moderate abdominal tenderness, without guarding or rebound in the epigastrium. Laboratory tests, including cardiac enzyme levels, were normal.

An electrocardiogram and a radiograph of the chest were normal. The patient reported that she had consumed uncooked salmon approximately 2 hours before the chest pain developed. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed diffuse thickening of the gastric wall. Gastroscopy revealed multiple anisakis larvae penetrating into the mucosa in the esophagogastric junction, fundus, upper body, middle body, and antrum of the stomach.

Eleven larvae were removed with the use of endoscopic forceps (see video), after which the patient’s symptoms resolved. Anisakiasis is a parasitic infection of the gastrointestinal tract in humans that is caused by the consumption of raw or inadequately cooked seafood containing third-stage larvae of the nematode Anisakis simplex or related species.

From an email re: Orange Juice filters

Rav Shein, The reason not to use the 230 mesh filter for orange juice is because according to many puskim you don't have to filter bichlal if you use a 230 mesh.

The 230 mesh removes so much from the oroanje juice that it loses it's juice taste.

I even think reb shlomo miller says the same ting.

[The Aida Bdatz Yerushalem juice filter is "80" mesh.] ys

The Churban of our children-Who's at fault?

My dearest Chaim,

As I fasted today, I sat and reflected on what our fast is all about. Why was our beautiful home in Yerushalayim destroyed? Why did the presence of Hashem leave us? What did we do to drive ourselves into this long bitter golus?
I always knew the answer, but I don't think I understood it as well as I do right now. It was destroyed because we were judgmental of those who did not ACT the way we wanted them to act. We were embarrassed of those who did not DRESS the way that we wanted them to dress. We looked down at those that did not TALK the way we wanted them to talk. And our misplaced ego caused us to think that we are better than they are. This is what caused us to destroy ourselves completely. Without having an ayin tovah, a favorable and understanding eye on those around us, we are not deserving of having the divine presence of Hashem live among us. We threw ourselves out with our self-righteous mindset.
Which group of us caused the destruction? The ones "on the derech" or the ones "off  the derech"?
On this I sit and cry... my eyes fill with tears... the epiphany just hit me like a ton of bricks: It was not the ones wearing the jeans (as an example) that caused the destruction, rather, it was the ones not wearing jeans that then looked down upon those who wore the jeans! WE are the ones who destroyed the beis Hamikdosh and we have not yet corrected our sin! In fact, with Torah and mitzvos being so strong... we have perhaps even strengthened our sin... we have taken it to a higher level.
I look at myself... am I not part of the group who uses our beautiful religion to look down at others? And if so, am I not the one responsible for our current exile? What good is my fasting and sitting on a floor if I cannot face the truth that "I" am currently responsible for this tragedy?!
I now fully realize that it is not you and your friends who are preventing Moshiach from coming... it is me and my friends!
I wrote my own kinniss: Woe is to me for I have repeated and repeated the original sin that caused the churban! Woe is to me for I have stabbed my own flesh and blood! Woe is to me for I took the holy Torah that is supposed to be sweet and peaceful "dirachehuh darchei NOAM vichal nesivosehuh SHALOM" and I used it to form a dagger which I then used to stab you - and others - over and over again!!
And so after a long day of fasting and contemplation, I look back at the way that I treated you and for this I now sit and cry. My dear sweet beloved Chaim !! How can I ever take back the pain that I caused you? How can I ever repay you for the smiles and hugs that you so deserved... but didn't get from me because I was too busy justifying to myself why it is OK for me to look down at you... to judge you harshly... and to actively destroy the Bais Hamikdosh? How can I give you back the lost years?
My dear Chaim, a long long time ago, I looked into the future and dreamed about the day that you would grow up, mature, learn right from wrong, wake up from your selfishness and finally come ask me for forgiveness. but after alot of inner searching... "I" grew up, and "I" matured, and "I" learned right from wrong, and now "I" finally woke up from MY selfish, haughty, egotistical, judgmental attitude! And now on this painful day I turn to you and I ask you - no, I BEG you - for forgiveness!!
I accept upon myself to shower you with love and affection, with hugs and kisses, and to do everything in my power to always be there for you through thick and thin! I pledge to work so so hard to make up for all of the pain that I caused you. I pledge to never look down at you, your friends, or on ANY JEW ever again. I am DONE with the negative attitude! I am DONE with being the judge and jury to another Yid! I am DONE with thinking that I am BETTER than ANY other Jew in Klal Yisrael. I am DONE being a part of the problem... and I pledge that as of right this moment... I will become a part of the SOLUTION!!
My Chaim, please open your heart to me... please open your arms to me... hug me, hold my hand and let us build the Beis Hamikdosh together...

What do you say? Your loving Totty

OU Alert V Heimish Barley Alert.

OU KOSHER ALERT – UNGER’S PEARLED BARLEY         August 15, 2016  Brands: Unger's Products: Pearled Barley

Company: Quality Frozen Foods

Issue:
Unger’s Pearled Barley, in particular lot #26917 and #62318, has been found to be infested and should not be used without checking the product thoroughly. Measures are being taken to prevent the rampant infestation of the barley.
The OU's Alert is very clear- "have been found to be infested"  Measures are being taken to prevent the rampant infestation of the barley.
On the other hand- The Heimish Hashgocha for the English speaking Tzibur they write "signs of infestation"  For the Yiddishe speaking Tzibur they write ." It is infested" . Why is that? Is the  English speaking Tzibur any less makpid on infestation, than the yiddish speaking Tzibur?  At least the OU was clear in their alert to everyone, and they are taking measures to prevent.........

Chodosh season begins early

CHODOSH BULLETIN-12 JUL 16

Those who want to purchase Yoshon items to store over the Chodosh season should do so now, as soon as possible.

The progress of the 3 crops, spring wheat, oats and barley is ahead of normal. According to the latest weekly bulletin from the US Department of Agriculture, the harvest of the Chodosh oats has just barely started. The spring wheat and barley harvest may start within 1 week.

Our tentative recommended cutoff dates for packaged foods is Jul 20 for oats and July 27 for wheat and barley products (not malt, which is much later). These are packaging dates. It should take several weeks beyond that for the Chodosh packages to reach the local groceries. However, freshly baked goods in bakeries, such as bread, challah, bagels may be Chodosh (tentative) starting Jul 27 in the mid West and Aug 3 elsewhere in the US.

Even though pesach was late on the solar calendar this year, still almost all of the 3 crops of interest were planted after pesach and are Chodosh. The early harvest this year is due to weather conditions in the growing areas.

The next revised update on this topic is due BE”H one week from now.

The "solution" to the lack of trained mashgichim for infestation

A properly trained Mashgiach is required to have good eyesight ($20 bill test), patience, serious, yiras-shu'mayim", etc. Of course he is to be compensated more that a regular mashgiach.

In each area there is to trained qualified infestation mashgichim that will go around to the various establishments "just checking their leafy vegetables & herbs", as coordinated by the Kosher certifier.

The regular in-house mashgiach will be trained just for leaf miners and pearled barley, etc.

In an area that has currently 50-75 plus mashgichim for food service, 5-10 trained mashgichim for infestation should be trained.

BTW- In Eretz Yisroel they have roaming mashgichim for "nikur", Terumos-maasrois, infestation, etc.

Sardines

An educated kosher consumer is our best customer

Seasons supermarket is now open

Season's Management & Kosher certifier;

Don't become educated from your own mistakes,

(Learn from your competitors mistakes).

Dear Rabbis,
We found serious issues in the kashrus standards, labeling, products, consumer confidence, etc.
We sent the following to another supermarket that recently opened in Lakewood and we received no response from them.  We feel that you can gain the required confidence by implementing the following;

Dear Rabbis, Store managers; et al,
To gain consumer confidence and prevent errors, embarrassment, etc. The hashgochas should be strictly on the repackaging end of it. That it to say, the hashgochas should decide what hashgocha I do accept or don't accept, as it's usually not because of kashrus but more a political decision. It's also that false sense of power I don't accept this and  I do accept that.
Why is that false and unfair to the customer and the supermarket, you were never at the manufacturing facility nor have enough information to make an intelligent decision, etc. But it gives you that sense of power, on someone else's back.
If you just certify the repackaging as being done under proper tightly controlled hashgocha, then you list on the label the brand name, the brand's hashgocha and the educated consumer will make his own decision.
In the butcher department, every brand is processed on meticulously cleaned equipment, you can carry every brand without any reflection on you hashgocha (as your hashgocha is strictly on the packaging).
Evergreen, KRM, etc I understand do it that way. Otherwise, (we observed the store for about 4 weeks now) we think it may be time to change hashgochas.
BTW- Don't be misled that Lakewood doesn't care about kashrus, yoshon, etc., perhaps the hashgochas et al don't.
You can continue in misleading, making fatal errors, etc. or wake up and smell the coffee.
Not always is adverse publicity better than no publicity.
Yehuda Shain
Kosher Consumers, Union, Inc.

Mind you, there shall be no cholov akum=treif products in the entire store.
Igres Moshe states that today in the USA there is no cholov stam / akum IT'S ALL CHOLOV TREIF! (due to the veterinary procedures on cows)

ETHICS IN CHINUCH

 ETHICS   IN CHINUCH

We in the field of Chinuch have accepted a fiduciary responsibility on behalf of the Tzibur at large. Therefore, we owe our fidelity to the Tzibur to uphold and maintain that fiduciary responsibility. Executives who face troubling decisions are often confused about how to arrive at the right, moral and ethical course of action. This is not surprising since by definition a “moral dilemma” is one where there is no clear right and wrong, only positives and negatives.

We should be guided in our moral reasoning by the insight that comes from respecting the moral rights of the Ben / Bas Yisroel; justice to colleagues and peers; consequences and outcomes; explaining and defending to others as well as to ourselves the decisions we make. Have I searched for all alternatives? Are there other ways I could look at the situation? Have I listened and considered all points of view of my colleagues and peers, while still maintaining high ethical standards?

All figs fresh or dried are to be considered infested

The story of the fig and its wasp-All fresh & dried figs are infested.
Inside the rounded fruit of a fig tree is a maze of flowers. That is, a fig is not actually a fruit; it is an inflorescence—a cluster of many flowers and seeds contained inside a bulbous stem. Because of this unusual arrangement, the seeds—technically the ovaries of the fig—require a specialized pollinator that is adapted to navigate within these confined quarters. Here begins the story of the relationship between figs and fig wasps.

"TRIPLE-WASH" the truth

"TRIPLE-WASH" the  truth!
Vegetables are grown with the use of pesticides to control the insects.
The triple wash is "strictly" to remove the pesticides. The more water used (even recirculated), the more pesticides are removed.

If any one is using the "triple-wash" to remove the insects?, they are doing the exact opposite. The recirculated water with insects is sprayed again on the sometimes clean product.

Never rely on triple wash re: infestation-it's a hoax & deception.

Rely on the expertise of the Hashgocha and their staff of fully trained experts.

Kosher certification with "Chumras (stringencies) "- good, bad or indifferent?

Kosher certification "Chumras (stringencies) "- good, bad or indifferent? (chumras are not necessarily attributes!)

If we have a system in place to produce an acceptably kosher product or Matzah and we may introduce a nice hidגur or chumrah that does not in any way compromise the basic system...Great!

On the other hand, if we focus strictly on the Chumrahs, at times, we are left with only the "Chumra" and all else is passed over or forgotten. Same with Chaburah Matzos, if we don't have a reliable "system" in place to produce an acceptably kosher product or Chaburah Matzos. As the saying is "The Emperor hath no clothing", one big bluff. חומרא דאתי לידי קולא  in other words חמר גמל.

It's an old difference of opinion found by uncle Eisav and Yitzchok Aveinu.

כיצד מאסרין את המלך? Which is Eisuv's concern, how do we deal with the salting acid issue?
יצחק אבינו אמר "שא נא כליך ושחוט יפה ואל תאכילני נבילה

Many time we don't ascertain the cold facts and we not only fooling the kosher consumer but worse, we are fooling ourselves. In order to cover up on the foul-up we come up with excuses over excuses and we only trip up one lie after the other. It does not pay, it does not work.
