Within the last few days local stores have suddenly started selling red, yellow and orange
peppers imported from Israel. These are found in regular and organic sections. The pictures
below were taken by me in Fairway, but I know that they are also on sale in West Side Market
(thanks Menachem Fruchter) and many other supermarkets and stores. One must treat them
as being safeik tevel, and separate Terumah, Maaser, terumas Maaser and Maaser Ani.

According to the Chazon Ish one may recite a summary of the full declaration, one must set
aside a coin for the pidyon of maaser, dampen and touch the produce, remove a bit more
than a 1/100th of the produce and say “I wish to separate Teruma and all Maasros according
to the formula approved by the chazon Ish.” Wrap the removed section and discard it, and
put the coin away in a safe place.

Others say one must recite the full text which is printed in many Siddurim.

It is important to note that this year 5778 is the 3rd year of the Shemita cycle and therefore
a “maaser Ani” year, consequently we do not separate maaser shaini (and do not redeem
the maaser shaini), if this was definitely “tevel” one would have to give the separated produce

to a poor person in the Holy Land or give the value of the Maaser Ani to the poor or to a
gabbai tzedaka to distribute, since our exported produce is all only possibly obligated in
Maaser Ani we can follow the principal of המוציא מחבירו עליו הראיי׳ and wait for a poor person
to stake a claim.

Technology has streamlined this matter: One can use a credit card to make an online
membership of a Maaser Ani cooperative, give the amount you assume you will need to
replace your maaser ani for the whole year to the gabbaim and that will automatically give
your maaser ani equivalent out to the poor in Israel. This is available both from Machon
Hatorah VeHaaretz which offers online memberships to its Bais HaOtsar

This only applies to vegetables for which the year begins at Rosh Hashana. The new year
for fruits begins on the 15th of Shvat, therefore any oranges and persimmons or dates you
buy now are still considered to be from the 2nd year of the cycle and require Maaser Shaini
separated.

from Mexico, and others with no label at all. One should do Hasfroshas terumos Umaasros
on the unlabelled ones but do each of them separately.

Hi. I’m Eitan. I’m a normal Modern Orthodox kid, who goes to a normal Modern Orthodox school, growing up in a mainstream Modern Orthodox world, and I’ve got a big problem with Modern Orthodoxy and where it’s heading.

Growing up in a Modern Orthodox world has been a lot of fun. I’ve been able to follow sports, watch movies and learn secular studies like any American kid. I’ve also been able to learn what it means to be a Jew, study Torah, and go through life’s struggles, spiritually and anti-semitically, like any member of the Jewish faith. But as I grow up and I’m exposed more to how members of the Modern Orthodox community, old and young, act, I realize that there is glaring hypocrisy and internal contradiction.

Living in a Modern Orthodox world is like letting an alcoholic shop by himself in a supermarket. The supermarket has many sections filled with healthy foods, but it also has a section dedicated to wine and other alcoholic beverages. Being that he is addicted to alcohol and feels that he cannot live without it, chances are that he will not be able to get out of the store without approaching the section.

While my friends and I grew up, we were presented with challenges by our Modern Orthodox world which made it just as hard to remain loyal to Judaism as it is for the alcoholic to stay away from the alcohol. Modern Orthodoxy provides many opportunities for positive effects on our lives, like the healthy foods have on a person. But it also hasn’t put up enough boundaries for us to avoid the alcohol, or evils, that the secular world has to offer.

As kids, we are proactively exposed to media and entertainment that is anti-religious and contrary to Halacha. Is it realistic to assume that a teenager’s value system will not be corroded by the endless subtle and not so subtle attacks on Torah true values?

Aside from the challenge of not letting the modern world negatively affect our inner world, the supposed balance between religious values and secular values seems to be much more weighted towards the secular than the religious.

Modern Orthodox teenagers can tell you who Kobe, Jay Z, or even Shakespeare is, but very few will know R’ Chaim Kanievsky or any other Gadol. We’ll know the history of America in depth, but won’t know how the State of Israel was established. We’ll know how to solve complex math equations, but wouldn’t be able to read a simple mishnah. We are infested with American culture, and forget our past. We care about world values, and neglect our own. We care more about Western morals than the true morals of the Torah. We are high school students before talmidim. We are aspiring sports players before yearning Talmud scholars. We are college graduates before yeshiva bachurim. We are Modern before Orthodox.

Many in our communities take up the attitude that G-d’s laws are a burden (or even immoral in certain cases) so they simply write off areas of Halacha as if they don’t apply. Of course, their kids get the message and proceed to pick and choose whatever is comfortable for them as well. And for the laws that are being kept, we treat them as if they are a checklist — Say Modeh Ani, check. Wash hands, check. Then go to davening, look on my phone and wrap my Tefillin before Aleinu because I’m so eager to get on with my day, but it still counts because I said Shema and Shemonah Esrei, right? Check.

We are so addicted to the secular world that Hashem is never given a chance. Here are a couple of suggestions I believe can help Modern Orthodoxy strengthen its status as a Halachic movement that inspires teenagers to appreciate, enjoy and be proud of living a Torah-true Jewish life.

Firstly, Modern Orthodoxy tries to create a balance that, at the moment, cannot work because we have no drive to be with Hashem and lack the philosophical and hashkafic perspective to articulate why we should be Jewish in a world with an assortment of other options. Therefore, we need to take a fresh look at education and schooling. There needs to be an emphasis on the truth of the tenets of Judaism, as well as an inspirational approach that creates a yearning and desire in the student to be closer to Hashem.

Schools and parents need to work together and be in the same place when teaching children what is right and wrong. And taking on mitzvot must be done incrementally from a young age. By teaching Halachic standards and making them the norm in our schools and families at a young age, a child becomes more acclimated to that way of life, and with the proper education and approach, he or she hopefully comes to see these standards as freeing him or her from being controlled by the yezter hara and wasteful secular values and culture.

In the home, parents must be on board and truly want their children to be ovdei Hashem. That means ensuring that they themselves feel a true connection and are particular about fulfilling the Halachot, and filtering out aspects of the secular culture that indoctrinate us with messages and viewpoints that are antithetical to true Jewish values. This is the only way they can be sincere and successful in giving over the mesorah to the next generation.

When I tried to publish this essay at a local Jewish newspaper they said “We can’t publish this piece, it’s too much for us. Plus you’re only a senior in high school, so you don’t have the authority to have a say in the current situation.” Although they were against putting this essay to print, the head of the paper still agreed with me, “Modern Orthodoxy has major flaws and everyone knows it.”

If “everyone knows it,” but no one does anything then it must be that they think Modern Orthodoxy is too big to change. Of course, an entire sect of Judaism cannot be changed overnight. It will be a long and gradual process to change the mentality and the educational system. Although it may be an arduous and ambitious undertaking, we must create a new Modern Orthodoxy that values and focuses on Torah and spirituality. There have been too many cases of kids my age living an uninspired robotic Judaism, or falling off the derech altogether in the recent years to be oblivious to the fact that our lack of boundaries, respect for Halacha, and love for Hashem are major causatives in this crisis.

Therefore, for the future of Modern Orthodoxy, I implore with all my passion and strength that the G-d fearing members of our communities take a stand and push for change in the current situation so that the future generations will be zocheh from an early age to appreciate Hashem and welcome His laws with a genuine affirmation that they were made out of love and caring for us, His children.

I don’t know where it’s from or who made it, but it states that one should “take some time to learn different kosher symbols before you Jew-shame someone.

It then lists three symbols: the widely known “OU” symbol and two others — one denoting copyright protection; the other denoting registered trademark protection.

Noting the “C” and the “R” within circles, the meme refers to the former as for Conservative Jews; the other for Reform. So they eat anything & everything.  See you at the wall.

Jerusalem - Just a few weeks before, many chareidi rabbonim forbad eating strawberries because they are heavily infested with tiny insects which are impossible to completely remove. The announcement removed the popular delicacy from the table of many frum homes.
Then the sensational news was published throughout Israel: Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar announced in a shiur that one may eat strawberries after rinsing them in water and removing their leafy tops!  The news appeared in Israel’s leading newspaper and even in the chareidi world’s leading VosIzNeias web blog.
Many reported relief upon hearing the lenient psak. Others sideswiped at the poskim who always seem to find a new prohibition to saddle the public with.
But now the Shas party organ reports that Rav Amar’s psak was quoted incorrectly. They asked Rabbi Shlomo Amar for his clarification, and he explained that his shiur had been about worms which are not visible to the eye and had nothing to do with strawberries.

“It never occurred to me, chalila, to dispute the
prohibition against eating visible worms!” he says firmly. “To say otherwise is misleading.”
Rav Amar explained, “I was speaking about a recent tshuva I had just written which dealt with worms that are not visible to the eye. I wrote that according to many great poskim of our generation, led by Rav Ovadya Yosef (SHU"T Yecheve Daas 6:47), they are not forbidden. I further was mechadesh that they are not even considered ‘worms’ according to halacha.”
Rav Amar said in the shiur that if, for example, strawberries had such invisible ‘worms’ on them, the strawberries would not be prohibited to eat. Obviously, the strawberries were only mentioned by way of illustration and not as the basis for a chiddush or a psak.
The Chief Rabbi reiterates that as experts have shown, strawberries are infested with worms which are visible to the eye and can be seen without the help of a device.  These worms must be avoided, and if it is not possible to clean strawberries of them, then strawberries may not be eaten.

Lakewood Library V Orthodox Jewish residents

 The Ocean County Library stated  "Ocean County library's long-standing commitment to  diversity and inclusion and that all people are treated with dignity, courtesy and respect." 

 The Jewish community  of Lakewood was founded and, without wavering, lives today under the principles of the Torah, which forbids all homosexual and transgender behavior.  This is hardly  but just another tradition like wearing of a yarmulke skullcap, or even modest dress; but rather at the very core of Judaism.  For the
 Library promote "Pride" in something unequivocally at its root against Jewish ideals, during an area that is overwhelmingly Jewish is a spit in the face and punch to the jaw of the entire Orthodox Community of Ocean County, and so many others too.   Placing a LGBT Pride month in a library in Lakewood is MORE offensive to most of the Jewish community, arguably, than if you placed a Neo Nazi Pride Month in Lakewood, flying the Swastika instead of the Rainbow.

 Parents in Lakewood of all backgrounds are very concerned with trying to raise children to follow their religion, either as we have been doing for eons. Ocean County's library is possibly a subtly anti-Semitic move trying to uproot thousands of years of religious tradition. Presuming  Parents and families do have Rights Furthermore since parents are worried that about the filth that their children will see at the library, you are lessening the educational and learning availability of the Jewish community for use of the library.  Ipso by promoting the Pride month you are making a UNWELCOMING environment to the Jewish community in the
 Lakewood library".

 We kindly therefore suggest you remove religion from your stated goals or  amend it to read "We are a multicultural and inclusive institution dedicated to providing a welcoming environment to all regardless of age, class, gender, ethnicity, mental or physical ability, race, religion- except for religions such as Judaism-, sexual orientation or political affiliation."
