The whole concept of shadchanim is an American invention (transported to Israel). While Rebbes and RYs would recommend or push certain shidduchim (especially when a bochur was getting up in age)
Holocaust survivors specifically married without shadchanim (but that might be because of other reasons -- they just wanted to get married and move on with their lives.
Even Shalom Aleichem made fun of the supposed shadchanim craze (calling them yentas)
Also, RYs and Rebbes thus had control over whom their children would marry, a trait that still exists today.
