Kashrus alert: Honeydew honey is not kosher- Some honey processors produce both in the same facility, and it is heated. Beware when buying honey, etc in health food stores.

Honeydew Honey- is not permitted, as it's an extraction from other insects, it does not become permitted just because the bee collected it.

"Honeydew" is a classification of honey that refers to honey produced by honeybees collecting nectar that is exuded from another insect such as an aphid or scale insect. It is quite common in a number of countries and the best known is honeydew from the Black Forest in Germany. World wide honeydew can be referred to variously as "forest honey", "Pine honey", "Fir honey" etc. and may sometimes be referred to by the specific species of tree producing the honeydew.

This year's harvest appears to be twenty percent lower than last year

Harvest reports from the major olive growing areas around the world indicate a significantly smaller crop in 2014, and combined with the steady growth in demand for Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the news has experts expressing concern about a shortage of top quality olive oil. This year's harvest of 2.56 million tons appears to be about twenty percent lower than last year's, and more important, falls well below the 3 million tons consumed last year. 

 "As with all agricultural products, olives and olive oil are subject to the whims and vagaries of nature," says Ann Sievers of Il Fiorello Olive Oil Company, who makes olive oil for some of the top names in the Napa Valley. "Here in Northern California, there are many concerns not only about the size of the crop but also the constant issue of the olive fly. It looks like our harvest will be just a bit below last year."

OK Kashrus advises to consume insects?

In the OK's kosher spirit on page 9 "shivas haminim salad", the ingredients consist of infested items.
Dried figs, Fresh figs, grapes, fresh parsley leaves are infested and can't be checked & cleaned by a consumer unless they are properly trained. Note: Pearled Barley must always be checked for insects by putting them into hot water for a few minutes.Dijon mustard contains wine.

The OK certified TROPICANA Orange Juice has scale insects among other ones.

There were recently put up signs (no name, no phone number, no name of store(s) it was found) all over Lakewood Re: all bell peppers have tiny insects on the bottom of the peppers.

Hisachdus expert Mashgichim and many others checked and weren't able to find any infested Peppers.

Hisachdus decided it must have been done by one that confuses "dirt" for insects, therefore such an irresponsible individual will confuse real insects for dirt-he is not to be relied upon for insects.

The signs that there are no name, phone, or other info area "PASKVILL".

Kashrus Alert: Asian Pears-Infested

Infestation Update from Rav Moshe Vaye

Rav Moshe Vaye, Lakewood- on Sunday Parshas Ri'aye gave a shiur on infestation for women. Then gave another shiur for Mechanchois in Girl schools. Stressed the importance of having all girl high schools & seminaries to teach hands on bedikas toloyim. It's been taught in eretz yisroel successfully in the Girl schools for many years. It must be part of the curriculum.

1- Chestnuts- Fresh- after cooking or baking, each one must be opened and checked for infestation. Peeled and cooked with good hashgocha from China- a cursory check is recommended.
2- Corn on the cob- Fresh, Frozen-Commonly infested with thrips & mites hiding under kernels. Must be de-kernilized prior to cooking, rinsed. Baby corn, no issues. Frozen or canned kernels-no issues.
3- Blueberries- Fresh, Frozen, Filling, etc- Scales, Mites, Maggots- unrealistic to clean, check-do not use.
4- Grapes- mites- Break into small cluster, do not remove from stem- wash with soapy water 3 times & rinse. Then seperate and rinse under water while rubbing each grape.
5- Apricots- Fresh- open, remove pit, check. Dried from Turkey- split open & check inside for infestation. If not fresh check outside for small whitish that may be mites.
6- Dates- split open check along area of pit for infestation.
7-Garlic- Mites, thrips- Must be carefully peeled, then rinsed while rubbing each one. Wash knife & table.
Pre-peeled garlic- must wash each one.
8- Scach-סכך Kainus- Booklice, worms- lay flat, bang with a stick above a white paper or sheet, inspect for insects. If found, spray with hot water & chlorine both sides- let dry, then rinse. Stand on end, bang with stick, inspect for worms or insects. When storing, put into plastic with mothballs.

9- Orange Juice- fresh, concentrate-Scale insects- very common, even with hashgochas- Aidah Yerushalem says must be sifted with a 70 mesh sifter, Rav Vaye recommends to sift through a white shirt.

ALERT: Due to various kashrus issues, especially infestation- All kosher cookbooks should be reviewed by a Responsible kashrus authority prior to publication.

Sales of Kosher Cookbooks Soar as New Books are Planned

Brooklyn, NY…Kosher cookbooks are hot sellers, according to Judaica stores in many parts of the country. One quipped: “Instead of taking the time to teach daughters the art of kosher cooking, most mothers nowadays simply buy one of some 90 kosher cookbooks now on the market, including the popular Kosher by Design (Suzie Fishbein) and Joy of Kosher (Jamie Geller) series.” A number of other cookbooks are in the works, according to sources which may very well bring the total to well over 100 by the end of 2015. By comparison, in 1980, said one Judaica store owner, he could recall only three, led by the popular cookbook by the Lubavitch Women’s Organization. Amongst the new cookbooks planned is Jewish Soul Food by Carol Green Ungar. Set for release in Spring 2015, the author claims that it “is the first ever Shabbat and holiday cookbook, to include not just recipes but in depth explanations of the deep meanings behind our most beloved Jewish foods.” One Judaica store said that despite his full selection of “sfarim” (Jewish holy books), ranging from the Talmud to ordinary sidurim (prayer books), the cookbooks represent more than 25% of his overall sales. By comparison in 2000, it was less than 10%.

Pollock: including Minced- Minced fish sticks, minced fish patties, minced fish cakes, California roll, Surimi.
FLOUNDER: All,  Georgia, et al is not infested but the fish mongers mislead the consumer claiming "it's Georgia" when in fact it isn't.
Herring:, including fillets- Fillets have less, but it is present. The Gavad of the Aida does not allow any herring in his Bais Medrash.
Sable: Unless farm raised.
Canned Salmon: All, Unless farm raised.
Salmon wild: All.
White fish: Winnipeg minced.
Carp: By head & tail area.
Lox: wild- Farm raised is clean.
Sea Bass: Usually by belly flap.
Sardines: Unless skinless, moroccan or Philipines.
Cod: Heavier by belly area, but found in other areas as well. 
Halibut: All.
Perch: Some varieties have more than others.
Roe- Heavily infested
Salmon, sole, ocean trout may have brown parasites (salmon lice) on the skin.
Mackerel- infested

A new patent has been filed which would enable chewy and gummy products to be made without gelatin. According to the article Wrigley's is especially aware of the need to eliminate gelatin for those who observe dietary restrictions. This probably means vegetarians, observant Jews and Muslims who are strict in following halal rules.

Potentially it means lots of products can be switched to becoming kosher, and those giving heterim for gelatin and gelatin like products can be put out of their misery.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for this to be applicable.

MONTREAL — These days, Martin Marineau is out of bed and working the fields just after sunrise. No matter what the day throws at him, whether it’s sweltering heat, rain or some man-made obstacle, he’ll likely only punch out at around 10 p.m.

Marineau will keep this routine up seven days a week for the next month. It’s the height of strawberry picking season in Quebec and the longtime farmer knows he only has a small window of time to get his harvest in crates and ready for customers.

But like so many of the province’s 700 strawberry farmers, Marineau’s crops have been devastated by the mild yellow edge virus and the strawberry mottle virus.

100% pure Olive oil isn't a "group 1"

A federal judge in New York gave Kangadis Foods, the marketer of Capatriti brand olive oils two choices: either recall its “100% Pure Olive Oil” products, or apply stickers to every tin notifying customers that what’s inside is not really olive oil at all.


In North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA) v. Kangadis Food Inc., U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff denied a request by Kangadis to limit the recall and labeling to only stocks held at wholesalers, according to Law 360.

Capatriti brand products are sold in Walmart stores, and NAOOA estimated Kangadis sells about one million tins of “100% Pure Olive Oil” each year.
In its first-ever legal action against an olive oil company, NAOOA sued the makers of Capatriti products in February, accusing Kangadis Foods, which conducts business as The Gourmet Factory, of “unlawful, misleading and deceptive misbranding.”

Olive pomace oil is a refined product extracted from the byproducts of the first pressing, the leftover olive pits and pulp, using high heat and chemical solvents. ”Olive pomace oil is not allowed in any grade of olive oil under any standard in the world,” said Eryn Balch, executive vice president of the NAOOA.
The NAOOA first took interest in the Capatriti brand when it “observed significant price discrepancy in recent months,” said Balch. The lawsuit documents state that Capatriti’s “100% Pure Olive Oil” sold for one-third to one-half the prices of comparable products.

Traces of pig DNA were found in Cadbury chocolate bars in Malaysia. The Muslims that live there are religious, and their religion prohibits the consumption of or contact with pigs.  Naturally they were very upset.  Since the British chocolate company was purchased by Kraft Foods, questions were raised regarding the other dairy products of Kraft (like Oreo cookies).  (In the past pig milk, a very fatty milk, could be used to “enhance the quality” of cow milk or compensate for watering down the cow milk.)
