Almost every year the unger barley is infested.
October re: ungars infested barley
http://yudelstake.blogspot.com/alert-unger-pearled-barley-infested.html
Barley (pearled) must be checked for infestation in hot tap water. Cold water does not bring them up.
ALL OTHER METHODS TO CHECK ARE NOT RELIABLE, PER INSECT EXPERTS.
Ungars Pearled barley & beans is usually heavily infested (including their cholent mix).

Rabbi wagshall relied again on rabbi stimetz
Go to Shoprite or one of the Hispanic stores on Clifton and 2nd and get Goya brand dried beans. Clean and insect-free. Compare it to Ungars and you'll see the difference
Do you have the date code of infested product?
Ungers started using new bags before Pesach. I recently saw the old bags in a arge kosher supermarket. They must be pretty old.
Are these infested bags the new ones, or the old ones?
Even Reb Shia Katz (Magrivor Ruv) and Reb Usher Ekstein (Belz Dayan) would be justified in pulling off the shelves all Ungers Barley due to infestation.
Ungers Barley is always infested, so it's "michzik" you are not allowed to ever buy it.
Rabbi Shain,
Is Unger's barley always a problem?? Is it checkable?? Are other Unger's products acceptable??
Very interesting that the heimish hashgocha on all hunger products are not on the barley. I hear that they know that hunger barley is often infected, so they don't want their nbasme on it. That's your hemish hashgichgas.
The ungers canned pineapple is good.
Live!!!! worms crawling all over
Recall was put out
nbasme = ?
Checking on papaer or other methods doesn't work, don't eat non-kosher.
Must check in hot water. soak for 5 minutes, stir, see if any appear.
But unger is always a problem.
These were not found using the hot water, or any water method.
I have found that Stop & Shop chain barley & for that matter beans the cleanest. I can't guarantee it will always be that way.
My guess is they are fresher there sell by date is always less than a year.
I have even seen Goya stuff with sell-by dates of almost 3 years.
BTW I think Goya is similar to the Heimishe companies is a Spanish private label.
Supermarket chains also bid out their brands, so they could change. However, so far Stop & Shop has been the best in my opinion, not that it couldn't change.
Anyone else see the same?
BTW never by any beans or barley Chocolate, Flour, matzos without a sell by date, it could get worms, after sitting in a shelf, or for that matter sitting next to an old wormy product on the same shelf.
It is a plioh azumah, that the machshirim ,don't insist on sell by dates 7 void their hechsher beyond the sell by date.
Goya stores their beans etc in a refrigerated warehouse.
They do NOT sell to stores more than they will be able to sell in 3 months.
Goya is most probably the cleanest premium bean products. I visited their growing fields and they have very strict requirements.
If you don't follow their requirements, No Dineros!! Fineto.
They do not sell commercial sizes either, because of the possibility on infestation.
BTE, because of this alert, I went out and bought Gefen barley. And guess waht! I found a beetle! Yuk!
Great, beetles eat up the other insects and beetles are easy to see.
Does gefen put a beele in each package? great idea-hope the OU doesn't get wind of this.
Goya is not a local off-brand, it's a big company. They do sell large bags of beans, not sure what you mean by commercial size.

Goya's beans are grown in the USA and packed in their own facility.
At conventions, buyers like Unanue forge and maintain relationships with farmers from the “bean belt” that stretches from New York over the mountains to Idaho.
“I learned something yesterday I didn’t know, which happens a lot,” Unanue begins in a soft Jersey accent. “The average age of a bean farmer is 63 years old. It’s a lot more work than if you’re planting corn or soybeans.” That launches a diatribe against federal ethanol requirements for gasoline that have boosted the price of corn — and the cost of farming, even for beans.
That’s a real concern for Goya, which can’t stray far from its low-cost price point and which is scrambling to supply a ballooning infrastructure. The company has opened facilities in the past few years in Miami, Houston and outside Chicago, and it’s expanding westward and into Mexico. Meanwhile, its product line has doubled over the past eight years, moving into categories like healthy food lines and organics.
Quote.
They don't have there own farms, they buy like the supermarket brands buy. There is no rule that they will always be infestation free.
Although you claim the stores never have stock more than 3 months old, I find that hard to believe, who is checking that, I have found expired flour & medicines at top brand supermarkets, They take it seriously 7 clean the shelves. Nevertheless I have found Stop &Shop supermarket brand the best as I said above. If you haven't used you won't know. As I said above it could change anytime, & that goes for Gya too.
I have no doubt that stop n shop's are better than the heimish brands, because they have higher volume and turnover and better inventory control. The point was, Ungar's and others buy a run of private labelled products and then store it in their warehouses for who knows how long. People are surprised to find insects in some pasta packages after they're stored for yoshon in NPGS. Those packages did not leave the factory with insects, they just weren't stored properly. Supermarkets don't buy from the farms, they pay a big facility to put their labels on their product. Goya controls the whole process including packaging and distribution, so they can monitor the quality of what's getting to the store.
Riiiight they don't sell at Costco?
Quit your shtussim!
I'm fed up with the misleading "heimish", it's infested, inferior product, very often from China with a "product of Canada" label, rip-off prices...…
I buy Goya brand raw barley and beans.
Some of the National certifiers are superior kashrus, superior quality, so why fool yourself time and again.
Philly Vaad: The risk of infestation is much higher with products that are purchased in small shops. Most infestation of pasta, dried fruits, flour, barley, etc. occurs during storage. National brand products sold at large (clean) supermarkets have a much lower rate of infestation. It is recommended that you do not stock up at home with products that tend to become infested. Some people keep their flour and other ingredients that tend to become infested in the freezer.

you don’t typically see the usual shemiros
Johannesburg Vaad: Note: Even good quality barley and rice are prone to infestation during storage.
