Beef weights decline- kosher slaughter affected

U.S. beef slaughter weights declining since December-Greg Henderson, Editor, Associate Publisher
Updated: April 22, 2011

Higher cattle prices and increasing costs for feeding cattle is helping send cattle to market at lighter weights, and, in some cases, the decrease is dramatic.

Cattle feeders are encouraged to sell cattle as soon as possible when feed costs are high, and the same is true during a period of increasing prices. March and April of this year seem to support those generalizations.

Among the leading slaughter states, Kansas reports the largest decline in slaughter weights, 23 pounds lower in March than in February, and 51 pounds lower than January’s 1,311 pounds. Further, the Kansas slaughter weight of 1,260 reported for March is 62 pounds lighter than the 1,322 average slaughter weight USDA reported for December.

Here’s a breakdown of average slaughter weights in four of the largest slaughter states, and the U.S. averages since December.

Dec. Jan. Feb. Mar. Chg. since Dec.
Texas 1,250 1,246 1,231 1,225 -25 lbs.
Kansas 1,322 1,311 1,283 1,260 -62 lbs.
Nebraska 1,354 1,345 1,326 1,318 -36 lbs.
Colorado 1,356 1,350 1,320 1,304 -52 lbs.
U.S. average 1,305 1,301 1,286 1,276 -29 lbs.
U.S. beef production through the first quarter of 2011 was 3 percent higher than last year, and last month’s average slaughter weight of 1,276 pounds was 3 pounds higher than March 2010. But last month’s average slaughter weight was 10 pounds less than February, 25 pounds less than January, and 29 pounds lighter than cattle harvested in December.

Yudel, now you can fully understand why the nirabator brought in jackabowitz.
Since jackabowitz stopped the treibering of alle products, their profit margin has gone up. (And with lighter cattle,it makes a big difference)

what is treibering?

Meal Mart now owns Mrs. Schreiber's that makes non shmureh matza balls under OU only and not Nirbater. They also make fleish items that they call glatt but are only under OU. It seems that everything in made by Meal Mart in Maspeth. What is different about the fleish that the Nirbater is out of the picture? So does the Nirbater say that he is not certifying the matza balls in the stores as some Meal Mart stores have a second hashgocho or is there a steera in his standard?
