RE: GRAPES- COR Alert

Please be advised that we have discovered some infestation on table grapes from Peru and Chile.

We have found a particular species of mites that are very small (about half of a millimeter) and hard to detect. While both factual and halachic research is ongoing we advise that grapes from Peru and Chile be washed carefully and thoroughly by using a strong stream of water.

Large clusters should be divided into smaller clusters so that the water can reach all surfaces of the grape.

Rabbi Shain,
Do you know if Positiv is still reliable? I friend of mine was working there and was fired. He told me that they fired the mashgiach who checked the lettuce in the Mexican greenhouses as well because they believe that the goim could check just as well. Is a goy kosher to check lettuce for bugs? Now I tried to log onto their website, www.postiv.com and its totally down. Are they closing down the company? Is the only reliable kosher lettuce company changing their policies?

Positive masgiach that goes to mexico still goes, he was there last week. I don't know about their site. They are up & running with the same reliable standard.

Eden is trying to do the same "fresh", but wash in Equador and ship to NY area, let's see how it goes.

A rov told me he is surprised that COR is only dinging on Peru & Chile because he has personally found them on multiple batches of California grapes. He said also that mites are not the only bug that is a problem on grapes.
