The Queens Vaad's Elchonon Zohn, who was last seen helping Ohel's David Jacobson destroy 1000s of Jewish graves for profit and saying Maran Rav Elyashev has no business telling him what to do, has started what sounds like a new scam.
Zohn is asking the public to donate generously to the new organization he has invented, the National Association of Chevra Kadisha. www.nasck.org
After he was mevazeh kivrei yesomim that are over 100 years old, yesomim that have no one to speak up for them except for a few brave askonim who Zohn tried to make look like they were the villains, he has the chutzpa to quote R' Yaakov Kaminetzky on meiss mitzvah.
Zohn uses a scaremongering tactic to get you to open your wallets, claiming that freye Yidden are being cremated at a rate of "over 30%".
We checked with someone who did a comprehensive family tree of about 1200 secular Jews and their burial places. This secular family tree, that included several recent burials, shows that virtually no one was cremated.
And what kind of accountability is there for the money? Why should we trust Elchonon Zohn? Years earlier, someone reported Jacobson's original partner in crime to the authorities, Rabbi Sidney Applebaum, and he fled the country when the NY State Attorney General came after him. Applebaum was also accused of stealing money from the fund for meissei mitzvah. After he resurfaced in Israel, he was accused by the mispalelim of his shul of selling the building without their permission and pocketing the money (See the NY Daily News article from Nov. 24th, 1995).
The RCC rabbonim are being accused on a blog of refusing to look into complaints of tarfus in Los Angeles (specifically the Glatt in Pico and the Cambridge in the Valley) because there is too much money involved.
