If you, like millions of other Americans, have spent extra money on Olive Oil that was labeled “Extra Virgin,” you may have paid extra money for a premium product you did not receive. A recent study by the University of California—Davis tested 19 different olive oils that were labeled “Extra Virgin” and concluded over two thirds of the tested oils failed the International Olive Council (IOC) standards. Olive Oil brands of which Halunen & Associates and partner law firms are currently investigating for fraudulent labeling include the following:
Filippo Berio- Bertolli- Pompeian- Colavita- Star- Carapelli- Newmans Own Organics
Mezzetta- Mazola- Rachael Ray- Kirkland Organic- Great Value- Safeway Select
365 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
According to the study, of the Olive Oils that failed, the most prominent reasons included:
“Extra Virgin” Olive Oils being adulterated with cheaper and more refined oils Poor-quality oils produced consisting of predominantly damaged or overripe olives Improperly storing the oils allowing increased oxidation levels because of sunlight, temperature, and/or aging.
The methodology that the UC—Davis study used in the testing process is one of which has been established by the IOC, and is accepted internationally. The USDA plans on introducing similar standards on October 25, 2010 to ensure that fraud similar to this does not plague the US Olive Oil industry any longer.
Halunen & Associates and partner law firms are currently investigating numerous Olive Oil companies for fraudulently labeling their product.
