[From a letter we received]
Fishy KCL
The KCL policy is that when you serve fish by a wedding, (for the people who don't eat meat) the mashgiach himself gives out the fish, and also the side dishes for the fish portion. In other words, you cannot take side dishes from the main meat line, because the workers use the same hands (with gloves), to put the meat and side dishes on the plate. So the side dishes have meat on them.
When Rabbi Aaron Kotler married off his daughter in Lake Terrace, I went into the kitchen to hang around and see what's going on. They started giving out the main course, and the mashgiach/worker was working on the main meat line.
Then a waiter came in and asked for a fish portion. So the mashgiach/worker started walking away from the main line. So the kid chef by the oven says, no! You stay where you are! I'll take care of the fish! So the kid gives the fish portion to the waiter.
Then the waiter says "what about the side dishes?" So the kid says, "Take it from the main line" So the waiter went to the main line and got the side dishes. Eventually the mashgiach/worker gave out the fish himself, but not in the beginning.
So the real holy rabbis, who got served first, ate fish and meat together. But the not so holy rabbis, who got served later, just had fish. And for this Aaron Kotler paid a 300 dollar hashgacha fee!
I wrote this story in the letter I gave to the KCL Rabonim in sep. 08, but I did not put it into my big article called "E KOSHER", because I did not think it was so important. But now that I hear that the KCL is saying that a working mashgiach is better then a plain good for nothing mashgiach, I felt I must publicize this story.
